Interfaith Food Pantry

2006 ANNUAL REPORT

In 2006 we accomplished the following:

  • We distributed 597,593 pounds of food during 15,175 family visit

 

  •  This fed

        1,457 families directly visiting the pantry

        4,100 people (all in household)                             

        And another                     

        2,767 families using *OTAPS food closets     * Morris County Office of Temporary Assistance

  • We served clients throughout the county

In the past year we have seen the following increases in numbers of:

bags of food distributed +10% family visits +10% families using the Pantry+10%
bags of food delivered +10% visits to homebound +9% homebound families served+22%

26 families required delivery because of age, 8 due to illness or injury, 48 due to disability, 38 requested delivery because of lack of reliable transportation and 5 because work hours not compatible with distribution schedule.   90 Delivery families are Caucasian; 24 are African American; 9 are Hispanic/Latino; & 2 are Other.

VOLUNTEER SUMMARY

 During 2006 13,285 hours of volunteer service were donated to the Interfaith Food Pantry.  The value of this time is $ 212,306. Adult volunteer time is valued at $17.55/hour*, set by Independent Sector**.  Youth hours are valued at $6.15, the federal minimum wage.

Volunteers at the Interfaith Food Pantry perform such tasks as office work, sorting food, packing bags to be distributed, stocking shelves in the packing room, transporting bags to the distribution site, recycling and taking out garbage, food distribution, delivery to clients and food pick up from the Community Food Bank and area organizations that are not able to deliver their food collections.

 Staff volunteers – Volunteers who are scheduled to work at the warehouse and distribution center on a regular basis doing specific tasks such as office work, sorting packing, food distribution, recycling, home delivery and food pickup.

Regular Groups - This includes groups that come on a regular basis through out the year.  These volunteers are involved with restocking 190 Speedwell or assisting at the warehouse. This group includes St Virgil Youth group, Koinonia Youth Group, St Patrick Church, and Christ the King Church.

Short Term Volunteers – Some of these are youth groups who visit the warehouse for a tour and participate in activities such as sorting. This group also includes adult individuals and groups who volunteer on a one-time basis, such as NYLIM, Pfizer and Hyatt as well as those that volunteer sporadically throughout the year.

*The hourly value is based on the average hourly earnings of all nonagricultural workers as determined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Independent Sector uses this figure and increases it by 12 percent to estimate for fringe benefits.

The Mission of the Interfaith Food Pantry is to:

¨       distribute supplemental and/or emergency food to eligible Morris County residents in need;

¨       provide hands on opportunities for neighbors to help neighbors;

¨       educate the public about the issues of hunger in our area.
